Crypto brokers now send the IRS a new form, Form 1099-DA. Under the IRS final regulations, brokers must report gross proceeds for transactions effected on or after January 1, 2025, and must report basis on certain transactions effected on or after January 1, 2026.[1] Revenue Procedure 2024-28 lets taxpayers allocate unused basis to the digital assets held in each wallet or account as of January 1, 2025.[1] If your coins moved between exchanges or wallets, a broker may not know your original cost, so many investors use software to rebuild their cost basis and produce Form 8949.
